Novel materials discovery

As part of the Center for Next Generation of Materials Design, a DOE Energy Frontiers Research Center, our group has focused on the design and discovery of new metastable materials.

Our group has focused in a few key areas, utilizing resources at the Stanford Synchrotron Radition Light Source (SSRL):

  • Characterization of new materials (X-ray diffraction/X-ray spectroscopy/GIPDF)
  • Formation and degradation of materials (in-situ X-ray diffraction during formation and degradation)
  • Understanding formation pathways in materials synthesis

This work is closely coupled to theoretical computation.  This theory helps in the prediction of:

  • New materials such as nitrides and alloys
  • Formation pathways in hydrothermal synthesis
