Together with Pride

Saturday, May 28, 2022 - 21:16

Brought to you by the LGBTQ+ employee resource group at SLAC.

Together with Pride

This will be the theme of this year’s Pride Month at SLAC. It means a lot for us, given we are back on site and rediscovering the importance of standing together and advocating as a community to improve our daily life at work. Pride Month is an opportunity to extend togetherness beyond the LGBTQ+ community, bringing awareness to the foremost attention of all our co-workers and inviting them to question and brighten the lab's culture.

On-site Flag and Banner

Join us to raise the flag! On Thursday, June 2, at 12 p.m., the Pride Progress flag will be raised for the first time in SLAC's 60-year history. Please join us for a small gathering near the flagpole in front of SUSB (Building 53). In addition, a banner affirming SLAC’s support of our LGBTQ+ employees will be displayed by the Main Gate. Take a moment to learn a little about the history of how the rainbow flag became a symbol of LGBTQ pride!

Zoom backgrounds

The LGBTQ+ ERG is re-using our Zoom backgrounds from last year. You can use them to show your virtual Pride support throughout the month. There’s something for every style - including boba lovers! And who doesn’t love Pride-ful bunnies?

Stickers and Buttons

Last year we successfully gave out many LGBTQ Pride stickers and buttons, and we were so proud to see them on badge lanyards, cars, drinking bottles and laptops all year long! We’ll be giving away more this year. Watch for the distribution spots around the lab, and enjoy the new design incorporating the Progress Pride flag colors.

Together with Pride March and Meet-up

To conclude the celebration Month, join us for the Together with Pride March on Wednesday, June 29, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. We will meet near the Progress Pride flag in front of SUSB (Building 53) and will parade around the lab with a festive ending on the Quad. This event is open to everyone at SLAC. Feel free to attend in Pride attire. We will have flags, stickers and buttons as well as light refreshments. Join our #lgbtq-erg Slack channel, where we’ll share more details about this and other events. You can also stay in the loop by visiting the LGBTQ+ ERG website to sign up to the listserv!

Queer 101 Workshop

The LGBTQ+ ERG is partnering with Stanford’s Weiland Health Initiative to bring a Queer 101 workshop to SLAC. Join us for this very interactive and engaging session where you can learn about terms, ask questions about what they mean, and hear about other people’s experiences with these terms. The workshop is open to all and is designed for a beginners’ audience as well as for experts in the topic. Use this link to sign up!

June's Book Club

Join us as we read S.J. Sindhu’s Marriage of a Thousand Lies, a book about a queer Sri Lankan woman who wrestles with her identity and her culture. We will have guided discussion questions on the #slac-reads-book-club Slack channel throughout June and a casual group discussion at the end of the month. The DEI Office has copies of the book available upon request as a part of the SLAC Reads series – sign up with this form by June 7. For more information about the DEI office initiatives, join the Slack channel #slac-dei-office.

A note on participation and time-charging: Supervisors are encouraged to allow employees to participate in community activities as operations permit. Employees should charge their usual PA since the activities provide value to SLAC. (However, if a particular project requires work to be backfilled during this time, a separate PA number might be required.) For employees who are part of a service center, they should charge their shop’s UDT (undistributed time) code. For exceptions or complex charging situations, reach out to your business manager.
